Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
Proverbs 4:23
Wow, I love this scripture so much! You know if we take a minute to think about our day from wake up to bed time, we’ll realize that the things we do are first planned in our hearts. We walk into the bathroom to brush our teeth. Why? Because our hearts said “I don’t want dirty teeth and booboo breath, so I’m going to clean my mouth.” We get in the car, put on our seatbelts. Why? Because our hearts said “I want to be safe and avoid getting a ticket.” We get home and cook dinner. Why? Because we like making home cooked meals or because restaurants and personal chefs everyday are expensive, for me it’s definitely the latter 😂. So now that we’ve established that everything we do has a motive behind it, let’s talk about the things in our lives that we’ve possibly tried to pass as a sincere motive but it’s really a cover up for a secret agenda hidden in our hearts. I first want to start with Social Media. Social media has made it so easy for us to hide behind hidden agendas. We post a picture of our new dog in the yard, but really we’re trying to display the fact that our yard is managed, groomed and extra green, and the neighbor’s yard looks like straight trash. Or we post a status about being upset about owing on taxes AGAIN, but really we’re trying to make the folks that didn’t have to owe feel like financial losers. For the non social media world, we help the elderly lady across the street just so everyone can see it, not because we sincerely care about the safety of the elderly woman. You see, the amazing thing about God is, He sees the heart and that’s what He cares about. Not what people are applauding us for, not what people see. What if we made an intentional decision to be mindful of our heart, to avoid trying to trick and deceive people as well as ourselves with outward actions while hiding the true agenda in our hearts. Because even if one million people applaud you for that action, that post, that picture, that kind act, that money given, those clothes donated, that family you helped, that orphan you sponsored, that dog you rescued, the “I love you” to your loved ones, etc, it’s all in vain if our heart and motive was not pure. Disclaimer: This is in no way saying that our actions should line up with our hearts as long as we’re not being phony, we should strive to not just avoid being phony but avoid having a foul heart altogether. Sometimes crazy stuff rises up in our hearts, that’s why we have Jesus. And let’s not be afraid to ask Him to consistently help us keep a clean heart, because He’s awesome like that.
10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Psalm 51:10
